The story for today is
The Story of Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden, with illustrations by Barbara Cooney. I just learned that it was made into a television movie called
The Wish That Changed Christmas. It's the story of a girl named Holly and a doll named Ivy, and how they found each other and a home. Girls who like dolls will especially like this story.
To go along with it, of course one of the many versions of
The Holly and the Ivy. I chose a classic rendition by the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers from their album
Songs of Angels.
(By the way, you can't really click to see inside the book here. But on Amazon.com you can.)

You will need to put disclaimers on some of these suggestions - I always cry reading/hearing Karin's Christmas Walk and Holly and Ivy (Holly and Ivy is one of the most gut wrenching stories of all time).
